Since 1999 the IHF/EHF Challenge Trophy competitions have been a unique occasion for smaller handball nations to take part in an international handball competition with a final match in the subsequent EHF EURO event.
The Men’s last edition hosted by the National Federations of Malta and Moldova in 2009 has shown once again the success of the IHF/EHF Challenge Trophy via the professionalism of its organisers and the performance of its participants; the EHF has therefore decided to keep on promoting and organising this competition. The IHF/EHF Men’s Challenge Trophy will take place between the 4 and 6 of November 4 2011.
The 2011 IHF/EHF Men’s Challenge Trophy will be played in two (2) groups of four (4) National Teams. Upon reception of National Federations final applications to host the competition this year, the EHF will decide whether two regional tournaments will be organised in two different countries or whether one National Federation will host the two groups. Another competition system may be decided if the number of final applications does not allow the aforementioned
groups to be formed. If regional tournaments are organised a final match between the winners of the two groups
will then be organised during the 2012 EHF Men’s European Championship (January 17, 2012 – January 29, 2012) to determine the 2011 IHF/EHF Challenge Trophy winner. The exact date and venue of this final match will be determined at a later stage.
Players’ Age Limitation: Based on a decision of the EHF Executive Committee, the National Federations participating in the 2011 IHF/EHF Men’s Challenge Trophy may only register players borne 1988 or later.
